The Importance of Regular Glass Maintenance and Cleaning

Glass windows do more than let in sunlight—they connect us to the outside world, brighten our spaces, and protect us from the elements. Yet, because they’re so much a part of our daily lives, it’s easy to overlook their care until something goes wrong. Whether at...

Now that you have the perfect mirrors and glass accents in your home or business, you want to make sure that you take proper care of them. Mirrors and glass should be cleaned regularly, and ensuring you use the proper cleaning supplies is essential to maintaining the appearance of your glass.

To avoid streaking, use a microfiber cloth, chamois or squeegee for cleaning. Paper towels allow streaking and sort of defeat the purpose of a clean, glossy appearance. You also want the finished, clean product to be lint-free. Even a crumpled up page from a newspaper will do the job.

The Cleaning Supplies

When it comes to cleaning glass and mirrors, you should gather up everything you need to clean with before starting the project. Distilled water, white vinegar, a large bowl or a spray bottle, a soft toothbrush or cotton swabs, a piece of newspaper or a soft, lint-free cloth.

Step by Step

• Mix four parts water to one-part white vinegar to create a cleaning solution.
• Now either use the spray bottle to spray the solution onto your cloth or dip the cloth into the bowl of solution. If it is a larger mirror or glass, it may be better to directly spray the solution on the area that needs to be cleaned.
• Using a circular motion, rub the glass surface or mirror to remove all of the spots. You will now need to use vertical strokes lastly followed by horizontal swipes to ensure you get the glass thoroughly clean and shined.
• A soft toothbrush or cotton swab is great to clean the edges or corners, removing built up dirt and grime.
• To add a finishing buff, get a sheet of newspaper or old cotton diaper or T-shirt. Quickly polish the glass, leaving it with a shine that will make it stand out.
